Mental Health First Aid training at AWCEvents

Learn the skills necessary to recognize and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in the community during an upcoming training at Arizona Western College.

AWC’s Health and Wellness Department is hosting a Mental Health First Aid certification training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21. The free training is open to the community and will be held in 3C Conference Room 2105 at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. Participants will have a one-hour break for lunch.

Like regular First Aid or CPR – the training is designed to give people the tools they need to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Statistics show that 75 percent of mental illnesses develop before age 25, making colleges ideal locations for early identification. However, many students don’t use mental health resources due to a lack of knowledge that those resources exist.

Since 2008, 300,000 people have been trained in Mental Health First Aid through a network of more than 6,000 certified instructors.
